Canola growers now have access to a new-generation defense against a long-time disease threat.

DuPont Crop Protection today announced that the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has approved a label addition allowing the use of DuPont™ Acapela® fungicide in canola for control of sclerotinia.

Todd Friday, Saskatoon-based Pulse and Oilseed market segment manager with DuPont, says the company is delighted to bring this news to canola growers and the crop protection retailers who serve them.

"Sclerotinia is one of the most economically damaging diseases of canola, potentially reducing yields by up to 50% in extreme cases," says Friday. "Canola produced $8.1 billion in revenue for growers last year, so in the fight against sclerotinia, the stakes could not be higher."

Acapela® was first registered in 2012 for control of key leaf diseases in pulses, cereals, corn and soybeans. Acapela®, a Group 11 fungicide, contains the active ingredient picoxystrobin. This active ingredient moves across, into and around the leaf to deliver strong preventative and residual activity.

"The effectiveness and versatility of Acapela® means growers will see the difference in disease control and realize the full potential of their high value canola crop," says Friday. "We believe that Acapela® will quickly become a product of choice for canola growers. And because Acapela® has an excellent fit on greater than 90% of crop acres in Western Canada, it will also be a mainstay for crop protection retailers."
